And It’s Mother’s Day Again…

And as I wish you mothers out there, I hail you all to question yourselves – Is that it? Is this all we mothers want?

The sweet nothings, the choicest gifts, the fantastic hand-written/hand-made cards, the accomplishments, the laurels which come with motherhood. Is that all there is to being a mother? Is this all a mother delights in? Is she fulfilled by creating and nurturing? Or is there more in store?

“Can you look deep into the crevices of your heart?” I asked an earnest one, and she replied “Yes, I will.” And she dug so deep, that her heart missed a beat. For laid out in black and white, was her release sheet. The release of her fettered soul from the grim dungeons of bondage, and she accepted it, thus redefining motherhood.

“You aspired for motherhood and you acquired it, and this aspiration was not unfounded. It was meant to be, for motherhood fetters to unfetter. The cry of a helpless child, teaching him to stand alone, walk and then run, fettered the mother’s soul, bonding her forever with her child – like one would be,” grandmother-to-be told her daughter at the delivery table.

“My child, once you see your baby’s face, you will forget yours; you will eat, sleep, drink when the child does, losing yourself completely.”

Was it a wisecrack? Or was it carried down over the years by the so-called wise?

That is truly said but interpreted falsely.

You don’t lose yourself; you live in those moments, gaining momentum in selflessness, patience and love. It is what you aspired for as a true pure soul, for wasn’t that going to lead you to freedom? Or was your love so impure and selfish that it would bind you into the cage of attachments, where pain and misery were all that you felt?

And as she came out into the realm of superficial living, she didn’t lose it; she shared it with all you mothers out here.

Well, mother, this Mother’s Day is for the pure soul who is a mother in the true sense – the true one who wins over the superfluous dictates of nature, of possessing, of binding, of vain; the one who doesn’t pass her aspirations onto her child; but the one who lets him bloom and grow so he can fulfil his.

Relentlessly giving him her all,
Right from winter to the next fall.
And then, as the days turn into nights and one season into another,
She sees her fledgling turn into a man.
That is when she knows it’s the end of her role span.

Now its time for her to move on, and rediscover a new life. Enriched with the love of her child, she begins her new journey.

And untethered, she flies happily as she sees him fly too – over, valleys and lakes, overlooking the grandeur of the open space, her mouth curves into a smile, and Mother Nature whispers in the form of a breeze.

“Kudos dear mother, you won over, for you carry with you the essence of a true mother.”
